The final step is to strip everything else from the document which could contain information which shouldn’t be released. But Acrobat found both: this is the text hidden behind the image. Although not impossible to detect manually, they would normally be overlooked, and released in the published document. Viewing hidden text is also excellent: the PDF I was using had two sections of hidden text, one concealed behind an image, and the other in text coloured white inserted between paragraphs.

My version of Acrobat Pro DC (up to date) consistently quit unexpectedly whenever I tried to show the preview of the document metadata, though. Once hidden information has been located, it is shown by type in a sidebar to the left. Whenever you apply redactions to make them permanent, Acrobat kindly offers to proceed to the next step, of locating and removing hidden information. Then the underlying content is removed, leaving just a filled black box to show where the content was. In a new line, typing =Rand(4,5) and pressing the Enter key will produce four paragraphs, each with five sentences of Microsoft Help text. You can use the Rand or Lorem AutoCorrect function to produce dummy text for a sample document. That should not contain any confidential or proprietary information. If you would like, you could send a link to a redacted pdf file. If it is there, you have not redacted it. You can open it and look in the document contents for your redacted text. You could do that by changing the extension of the file. To be sure that it is truly redacted, try again opening it in Word and see if you can find the redacted text.
